SFCC Honors the Legacy of US Senator Diane Feinstein

The San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) is proud to honor the tremendous legacy of leadership and service of US Senator Diane Feinstein, who passed away on September 28th at the age of 90. Senator Feinstein was one of the founders of SFCC in 1983, when she was serving as Mayor of San Francisco. She recognized the need for increased employment and educational opportunities for youth in the city and worked to found the Corps with Justice Tony Kline, who has since come back on to the SFCC Board of Directors. “Senator Feinstein was always a champion for the Corps and an advocate for the opportunity youth SFCC serves,” said Interim SFCC Executive Director James Walker. SFCC is now one of 14 local conservation corps across the state and was the first urban conservation corps in the state. Since its inception in 1983 SFCC has worked with approximately 6,000 youth who have provided more than five million hours of service to the community. In 2018, Senator Feinstein took time to make a video recognizing SFCC on its 35th anniversary and to celebrate its achievements. Her leadership will be missed and  SFCC send its condolences to the family of Senator Feinstein.

Assembly Member Phil Ting’s Team visits BottleBank™!

Summer Interns from Assembly Member Phil Ting’s (D, San Francisco) office visit the San Francisco Conservation Corps Bottle Bank Mobile Recycling Pilot location at 250 13th Street. The Interns hold up bags of California Refund Value (CRV). The bags are pre-loaded with a QR code, and once a customer has signed up for a bottle bank account and the bag is scanned, the funds are deposited in a customer’s PayPal, Venmo, or bank account within 72 hours. SFCC operates one of five pilots statewide. The project is a partnership between SFCC, the San Francisco Department for the Environment (SFE), Our Planet Recycling(OPR), and CalRecycle. Assemblymember Ting was the primary legislative sponsor of AB 1454, which created funding for the pilots. If this pilot is successful, it will look to be expanded. Since the pilot launched on January 3rd, it has processed 416,727 CRV bottles and cans and returned $22,546.25 to consumers.

Phoenix Day Block Party

On September 17th, San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) staff and Corpsmembers worked the Phoenix Day Sunday Streets Block Party in the Bayview and Hunter’s Point Neighborhood event, designed to build a sense of community and inclusion throughout San Francisco’s many neighborhoods. They used our Recycling Wheel to help educate residents on proper e-waste, bottle and can, used oil, and tire recycling and disposal and promoted SFCC’s Zero Waste services. SFCC’s main administrative building and its Evans Campus are both located in the Bayview and Hunter’s Point Neighborhood and a greater sense of community needs to be fostered and celebrated. Bayview has been identified as one of the five extreme poverty neighborhoods in San Francisco by the Brookings Institution and 12% of Hunter’s Point residents, received public assistance, a rate nearly three times higher than the state and national average. Over 30% of SFCC’s corpsmembers come from the 94124 zip code in Bayview and Hunter’s Point. SFCC works to create opportunities for its corpsmembers to give back to and to support the community they come from.

Italian American Heritage Festival

On October 10th, San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) corpsmembers and staff worked the Italian American Heritage Festival in North Beach as a registered “Event Greener” with the City of San Francisco by collecting bottles, cans, and other recyclables and educating the public about our program and mission. As a result, 503.5 lb of recycling was diverted from landfills, and Washington Square Park remained litter-free due to SFCC’s litter abatement efforts.

OMI Roller Skate Block Party

On September 11th the San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) corpsmembers and staff worked a neighborhood roller skate block party to pass out do-it-yourself (DIY) oil change kits and to educate the public about how to recycle used oil and the damage that can be done to the water supply by just one gallon of oil. SFCC corpsmembers are seen here with San Francisco Mayor London Breed.

Bottle Bank Mobile California Refund Value (CRV) Recycling Pilot at Stonestown Galleria Mall

The San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) held a demonstration of its Bottle Bank Mobile California Refund Value (CRV) Recycling Pilot demonstration, July 15th at Stonestown Galleria Mall. SFCC is partnering with the San Francisco Department for the Environment and Our Planet Recycling on a project to return CRV funds to consumers by providing mobile drop-off locations. Consumers place their CRV materials in special blue bags that have QR codes. Once they drop off their bags, an artificial intelligence (AI) machine calculates the value of their CRV funds and deposits them within 72 hours into the consumers’ bank account. The demonstration was attended by California Assemblymember Phil Ting (D, San Francisco), who also chairs the Assembly’s Budget Committee and KQED Investigative Reporter, Monica Lam. Ting is seen here discussing the pilot with SFCC Bottle Bank Coordinator Hassan Benyouref. The pilot is scheduled to go live citywide in January 2022.
