On Saturday, June 16th, SFCC Corpsmembers and Staff attended the Pascadero E-waste and Tire Amnesty Collection Event, where community members dropped off items to be recycled which included computers, monitors, televisions, printers, and other electronic equipment. We were glad to see so many community members stop by to drop off their tires as well! Stockpiled tires pose threats to public health, safety and the environment. Tires can produce toxic smoke and pollute the air, water and soil. Fortunately, tires can be recycled, re-purposed, retreaded and shredded for other uses and we are proud to report that we collected over 500 tires! We are proud to be a part of reducing waste in the San Francisco Bay Area!

SFCC Hosts our Annual Career Expo

Every year the San Francisco Conservation Corps collaborates with the John Muir Charter School to host the annual Career Expo. This year on June 14th, Corpsmembers and Academy students got a chance to showcase their career development skills while networking with peers and other community members. We had 10 community partners who took part in this year’s event including the SFFD, PeopleReady, BAVC, SFO Airport, Urban Services YMCA, SF City College, Allied Universal, Gridalternatives and Aerotek!

The Career Expo had four rotating rooms; 1. Mock-Interviewing, 2. Speed Networking (30 Second Pitch), 3. Career Game and 4. Community Room (Career Fair). We had 27 Corpsmembers involved total and 13 were also John Muir Students. Thank you to everyone that was involved for making this event a success!

Intersession Workshops: Real Talk, Emergency Preparedness, and Healthy Eating

During the John Muir Charter School trimester break, SFCC hosts a 2-week intersession workshop so our Corpsmembers can continue learning and gain new skills. This month, our topics included Real Talk group discussions, Emergency Preparedness, and Food Security/Healthy Eating. Our cooking class was a big hit, and Corpsmembers made healthy meals such as overnight oats, omelettes, and roasted vegetable salad. They also learned about eating well on a budget and the importance of nutrition. Thank you to our partners, who facilitated these workshops and engaged our Corpsmembers in activities that inspired them!

Our partners: Kitava Kitchen and Community Youth Center.

Learning Outcomes Day

Last Thursday, March 15th, SFCC and John Muir Charter School hosted our Learning Outcomes day! This was an opportunity for our Corpsmembers to present on topics that interest them, practice public speaking, and learn more about each other. We invited our community supporters and partners to be part of the "judging team", and they got to hear from our Corpsmembers who spent two weeks preparing. The presentation topics included career readiness preparation for culinary arts, the college application process, SFCC's Recycling Operations Center, the dangers of smoking, and even a demonstration on how to fly a drone! We are proud of the Corpsmembers' hard work and dedication to learning- thank you to everyone who made this event a success!!
