Program Description
The San Francisco Conservation Corps (SFCC) is a non-profit job readiness and education program serving young adults between the approximate ages of 18 and 26 who work within crews to address community needs through service and conservation-related work. SFCC job readinessopportunities for young adults include, but are not limited to, landscaping, restoration, installing play structures at public schools and community centers, recycling, and internships. Concurrently and in partnership with the John Muir Charter School, the young adults focus on attaining their High School Diploma and GED or participate in the Corps-to-Career higher education program.
Ramp Academy
This position would function within a model called the Ramp Academy, a partnership between the SFCC and the San Francisco Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development. The objectives of Ramp are to serve underserved young adults primarily from low income communities and to help reduce barriers the young adults have for gaining unsubsidized job training and employment.
Job Summary
The Life Skills Supervising Counselor works in close concert with other Ramp Academy Staff to seamlessly develop, monitor, and maintain programming for Ramp Academy Participants. The Life Skills Supervising Counselor is responsible for delivering and implementing a life skills program for Ramp Academy Participants. Life skills include but are not limited to classes on financial literacy, conflict management, healthy life styles, alcohol and drug prevention and other preventive and developmental counseling to provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they worsen and to enhance students’ personal, social, and academic growth. This position also supervises participants when they implement service projects,supervising and training crews of Participants.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Life Skills Supervising Counselor (constant – more than 66% of time): Develop and implement model and plans for developing life skills of Ramp Academy Participants, including working with Participants to help them increase their ability to identify and remove barriers to successful employment; facilitate training and discussion groups for male and female Participants on issues identified to develop life skills; consistency and objectivity in all aspects of case management duties and relationships; keep apprised of, adhere to, and implement all SFCC policies and procedures; instruct Participants on field projects and tasks when supervising them on service projects.
Individual and Group Planning (constant – more than 66% of time): Assist Participants, individually or in groups, with developing personal/social skills, goals and plans; facilitate training and discussion groups for male and female Participants directly related to developing life skills; maintain and produce Participant reports as needed; conduct on-going life skills evaluations with Participants to monitor progress and needs.
Communication (frequent – 34-66% of time): Communicate directly with supervisor regarding all processes and systems developed; maintain professional, open channels of communication with both Participants and Ramp Academy Staff; Participate in regular case management sessions with the Ramp Academy Staff.
Administration (frequent – 34-66% of time): Complete all necessary administrative tasks efficiently and on time including but not limited to maintaining Participant progress reports and paperwork; participate in participant interviews and intake processes.
Typical Working Conditions
Typical conditions include working in an office & classroom setting; constant keyboarding, handling, and other repetitive hand motions; and constant sitting and standing; working in teams and in groups. Facilitating daily physical training (pt) exercises.
Equipment Used
This position requires constant use of keyboarding/ten key equipment, computers, and other electronic equipment. This position requires frequent operation of agency vehicles to drive to various sites and venues throughout the SF Bay Area, which requires insurability on the SFCC’s driving insurance policy and the ability to operate agency vehicles and navigate by automobile throughout the SF Bay Area.
Minimum Education and Experience Required
2 Year of experience in post secondary educational institution
2 years demonstrated experience providing life skills counseling of urban young adults.
Knowledge of multiple issues and challenges facing young adults with limited or no previous exposure to life skills issues.
Knowledge of and experience in group work and group dynamics; knowledge of and experience handling crisis intervention.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Computer skills, including spreadsheet and database applications for maintaining data and generating reports.
Ability to manage and prioritize multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
